Free English Classes at Swansea University – July 2016

Posted on behalf of Swansea University’s ELTS department

Dear Swansea Community Members

ELTS offers free English Language Classes to any non-native speaker of English in the local area at Pre-intermediate level or above via our Teacher Training programme. There does not need to be any connection to the University.

The basic details are below:

Free English Language Classes

Monday 4th July to Friday 29th July 2016

Monday to Friday  10:00 a.m. – 12:00

Classes at three levels: pre-intermediate, intermediate, and upper-intermediate.

We will hold drop-in registration sessions for new students as follows:

Thursday 30th June and Friday 1st July

Margam Building 3rd Floor 9-3pm

Students with additional queries should contact:

p.l.neville@swansea.ac.uk or e.main@swansea.ac.uk

While we try to accommodate all who wish to attend, pre-registered students will have priority if numbers reach our class limits.

Please encourage any non-native speaker of English who you feel could benefit from classes to attend, and distribute this information to any suitable person inside or outside the university. The classes are a good mix of international students, and they will be made very welcome.

I regret that we are not able to reimburse travel expenses.

Many thanks

Peter Neville

HBTS4R: Sunshine and Friendship at the Elan Valley

A wonderful day was had by all in the beautiful Elan Valley near Rhayader on Sunday. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water very kindly offered to host an Away Day and at around 11am, a coach and two cars with around 60 people arrived. The group represented a plethora of nationalities (and language abilities!) and included families with children.

A fantastic time was had at the Garage Music Venue last night. Skabartawe Swansea kindly allowed us to be their featured charity at one of their very popular Ska/Punk nights. We were very happy to see so many keen supporters of UiD having a great time – and a good dance. A good amount of money was raised and as ever we are delighted at every opportunity to continue/extend our service. The raffle was very popular and everyone was hoping for the top prize – 2 nights stay (for 2) in “a quirky little hut in a secret landscape” near Hay on Wye. Many thanks to Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees for making this available through their kind and supportive members.  A last minute prize of 2 night’s B&B in Madrid was kindly added by Ni – thank you so much.

Finally, a massive thank you to the UiD team of volunteers for such an energetic and positive approach. You worked hard and it was an amazing success – thanks so much for your passion and teamwork – as ever.

UiD FC Vs Wales Supporters XI – Great Game!

Today’s match against Wales Supporters XI was a very exciting affair. Well done to everyone who found the venue and for playing and standing around in the cold. We may have lost 11-1 but our spirits are not dampened. We are very proud of our team and you look fantastic in in the UiD kit.

An excellent fun day out – THANK YOU

A word from Martin the coach.

UID FC 1 WALES SUPPORTERS TRUST XI 11

Thanks to all who helped make this possible. To the UID volunteers who helped with transport, to our many supporters who came to watch on a cold windy day. Special thanks to Exotica Foods (St.Helens rd) for their kind donation of our half time oranges. Thanks to all our players who kept going throughout the game.

Sadly plans were changed by late arrivals and a couple of players who did not even make it to the ground. UID were unable to field their strongest team. Many of the problems in the first half were caused by the lack of organisation due to players in unfamiliar roles. Whilst some individual skills stood out, far too often the Wales XI found themselves with time and space. Their shooting was first class and they scored some great long range goals. Chances were missed for UID which might have seen a closer scoreline had calmness prevailed at the right moment. A little more power and a little more accuracy was needed up front. UID did look dangerous when they could move the ball in attacking areas but shots were well covered by the Wales XI defence.
A 0 – 5 half time scoreline saw some changes of personnel for UID with much of the midfield changed.
The second half saw improvement from UID as they enjoyed more possession. The Wales supporters XI continued to give a lesson in finishing as they continued to add to their goal tally. Dimbar finally managed to score for UID and it signalled a period when the team spent longer on the ball as their opponents tired. For all their pressure it was not to be as the Wales XI defense drew tighter and worked hard to close down. Some good passing combinations particularly down the left for UID showed signs that the team had stabilised but all too late. It must however be noted that the players kept going til the very end and were complimented on their character by the triumphant Wales supportes XI. The final stages showed what might have been if the right players had been available as the majority of possession was with UID. A defeat from which lessons must be taken.
Finally thanks to our supporters who came along to cheer our team. It was great to see so many of you there. We will do better in the next one.

Sudanese Community Cohesion Event @uidswansea

Many thanks indeed to the Swansea’s kind Sudanese community for providing such engaging and informative activities at Unity in Diversity.

What a wonderful evening of traditional poetry, music, dance and participatory drama where we all learned of the conflicts in Sudan and difficulties faced as an asylum seeker or refugee in your new home. Many issues were addressed and there were many clear messages of positivity demonstrated articulately and effectively through drama. An incredibly well-planned event with the clear objective of promoting cohesion and personal development within the community. We are very proud to host such a dynamic program, devised and delivered by our community members themselves.
